
Objectives
By the end of this book, students should be able to:
1. Define and explain the principles of beat reporting, news writing style, and specialized reporting in modern journalism.
2. Demonstrate competence in research-based reporting, including interviews, vox pop, observation, documentary and online research.
3. Apply professional news writing conventions, including inverted pyramid structure, objective tone, active voice, and AP Style.
4. Write accurate, concise and ethical headlines that reflect news content without sensationalism.
5. Report specialized beats including judiciary, politics, health, sports, education, aviation, crime and disaster/emergency with appropriate terminology and procedure.
6. Analyze and manage the physical, digital, psychological and legal hazards associated with journalism practice in Nigeria and globally.
7. Apply Nigerian legal frameworks (Constitution Section 39, Defamation, Copyright Act 2022, Cybercrimes Act 2024 as amended) and ethical codes to real reporting scenarios.
8. Use digital newsroom tools - newsroom systems, Final Draft, Adobe Audition, Adobe Premiere, and AI tools - with editorial judgment, verification and accountability.
